Canada Child Benefit for Newcomers 2026: How Much You Get and How to Apply
The Canada Child Benefit (CCB) is one of the most financially impactful benefits for newcomer families. It is tax-free, paid monthly, and based on your family's income — meaning lower-income newcomer families often receive the maximum amount. Many families miss out simply because they don't know how to apply.
How Much Is the Canada Child Benefit in 2026?
- Children under 6: Up to $7,787 per year ($649/month) per child
- Children aged 6–17: Up to $6,570 per year ($547.50/month) per child
- These are the maximum amounts — the actual amount decreases as family net income increases above $36,502
- A family with two children under 6 and income below $36,502 receives approximately $1,298/month tax-free
Who Is Eligible as a Newcomer?
- You must be a Canadian resident for tax purposes — which applies from the date you arrive in Canada
- Permanent residents are eligible immediately upon arrival
- Work permit holders are eligible once they've lived in Canada for 18 months — from month 19 onward
- You must be the primary caregiver of a child under 18
- Both you and your child must be in Canada for the months you receive payment
How to Apply for the CCB
There are two ways to apply:
- Automated registration: If you register the birth of a new child through your province's vital statistics office, you can request CCB registration at the same time. This is the fastest method for newborns.
- Form RC66: For all other situations — download from cra.gc.ca, complete it, and mail to your tax centre along with RC66SCH (for non-Canadian-born children). Processing takes 8–11 weeks.
Important: You Must File Taxes Every Year
Your CCB is recalculated each July based on your previous year's tax return. If you don't file your taxes, your CCB stops. File your return by April 30 every year, even if you have no income to report.
💡 Pro Tip: 💡 What most newcomers don't know: You can apply for the CCB retroactively for up to 10 years. If you were eligible but didn't apply, you may be owed back payments. Contact the CRA or a tax professional to request a retroactive assessment.
