How to increase your CRS score — practical strategies
- Improve your language test score — Going from IELTS 7.0 to 8.0 in all abilities can add 30–50 CRS points. Take an IELTS preparation course. Retake the test. For French: even basic French proficiency adds 25+ points and opens French-stream draws with lower cutoffs.
- Get a Canadian post-secondary credential — A 1–2 year Canadian college diploma or degree adds education points and gives you access to the Canadian Experience Class after working in Canada post-graduation.
- Get a Provincial Nomination (PNP) — Provincial nomination adds 600 points — essentially guaranteed ITA. Apply to every province whose streams you qualify for. This is the single most effective way to boost CRS.
- Get a qualifying job offer from a Canadian employer — TEER 0 or TEER 1 job offers add 200 CRS points. LMIA-exempt positions from larger employers count. Job offer doesn't need to be LMIA-backed for Express Entry points in all cases.
- Improve your education credentials — If you have a foreign credential, evaluate it through WES. A 3-year foreign degree may only count as a 2-year Canadian credential — re-evaluation by a different organization sometimes yields better results.
Category-based draws — the 2025-2026 shift
IRCC now conducts both general draws and category-based draws targeting specific skills. Category-based draws have occurred for: STEM occupations, healthcare professionals, skilled trades, agriculture workers, French language proficiency, and strong French language + all job categories. If your occupation falls in a category draw, you may receive an ITA with a lower score than the general draw cutoff.
